Walk into Clay was an interactive exhibit and film installation by Emilie Flower as part of the ‘Temporary Exhibition’ at the Uganda National Museum, 2020. The installation was a 10 m wet clay path for the audience to walk through and a film installation of high water during the November floods in York. The installation was an invitation for the audience to disrupt standard protocols and familiar framings - such as the way we are supposed to behave in museums - that sanction our resistance to engaging in messy processes. For those who did walk the clay path, some found it scary, some relaxing, some fun; for many of the adults it surfaced related experiences of walking in clay as a child and brought back a welcome feeling of mischievousness and nostalgia.
